BCOS Statement 5th January 2021

A letter from Archbishop Cushley

Edinburgh, 04 Jan 2021

Dear brother priests and deacons,

Following the First Minister’s announcement today, our churches will be obliged to close from Friday (08 January 2021) inclusive. The only exception made is for funerals (maximum 20 persons), weddings (maximum 5 persons) or the use of the church for placing worship online, naturally including Mass.  These restrictions are expected to run for four weeks, but I will update you with further details as they arrive.  Please see below the Scottish Government guidance, which can be found at

https://www.gov.scot/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-stay-at-home-guidance/

I am sure you share my dismay at the imposition of these measures, in spite of the good intentions that they represent.  I therefore ask you to cooperate with these rules in the name of the common good and our shared responsibility for our fellow citizens.

Meantime, I will ask the Bishops’ Conference to seek from the Government clear scientific evidence as to why our churches may not remain open and of the risk posed by gathering for worship in a way that has already been heavily curtailed, and that we have so far followed scrupulously.

Sincerely in the Lord,

+Leo Cushley

Archbishop of St Andrews & Edinburgh
